After a very fruitful performance last year, Tachibana Kanade returns this year ready to face off against any challenger. Although she has never before met any of the people she faces today, it does not mean that she should relax her guard. Hotogi Shirayuki is sweet and caring, but do not let her appearance fool you. If provoked, she attacks with no remorse. Inui Sana is the type that most would like to have as a best friend. Although she is compassionate and energetic, sometimes even she wants to honestly say what is on her mind. Reki is a thoughtful, yet silent, sniper who can easily take her opponents down unnoticed. She is very helpful when it comes to missions, usually only needing one bullet to save her friends from a bad predicament. Sakura Kyōko is willing to do whatever it takes to win this bout. Proud, kind, and great with a spear, Kyōko never backs down from a challenge and will strike first when prompted. Takakura Himari is a polite and cute girl who does not wish to have others worrying about her so much. She hopes to live as long as possible, so why not try to participate in a competition such as this? Tōwa Erio appears strange at first, but she is merely shy and insecure with the world around her. Even with her poor reputation, she tries her best to connect with the outside world. All of these girls have their own reasons to be successful in ISML. In this very first match, which one will be able to perform her best until the show reaches its end? Seven girls with varying personalities come together for what are, to all but two of them, their first appearances in the ISML Preliminary Phase. Finishing in 4th place in what was her first ISML campaign has rewarded Gokō Ruri with not only prestige, but also a target over her head. She is now the one to beat for the other five if they are to prove themselves. Mikazuki Yozora is more than willing to suit up with her armor piercing wit and bully others on her way into the main arena. Headstrong Shimada Minami will use her physical prowess and mathematical skills to bash her opponents into place. Shinonome Nano may charm the others with her smile, but they better be careful of the surprisingly effective inventions hidden in that human exterior. Suzutsuki Kanade, a girl who was born into a prestigious family, is determined to show these girls that she can be victorious, even without the use of wealth. Tomoe Mami missed her chance to stand on the ISML stage last year. This time around, she is set on participating in the Regular Season with her fellow mahō shōjo. Tsugumi's technical skills have helped her many times in the past and she hopes they will bring her to victory today. For most of these girls, pride is what allows them to go far for the sake of themselves and others. Despite having economic problems, Ayuzawa Misaki is well respected in both her part-time job and at her school. Honma Meiko continues to wish for her friends’ happiness even if she cannot be seen by any other than the boy whom she loves. Konoe Subaru is willing to do whatever it takes to be by her master’s side, be it as a butler or as a friend. Morishima Haruka wishes not to worry others too much, but sometimes her cheerful and innocent personality is the cause of their uncertainties. While her past remains at the back of her mind, Nakamura Yuri's leadership capabilities have made her a role model for many of her comrades in the SSS. Shinomiya Ayase's kindness and strong will has allowed her to disregard her disability and fight for what she believes is right. Takahara Ayumi understands the hardships she will have as a track member, but she continues fighting for what she enjoys. With their heads held high, these young ladies will try to do whatever they can to get the win here tonight. Only one will be able to stand tall when everything is said and done. In her first ISML season, Charlotte Dunois surprised many by managing to finish in 14th place. This year, with the new tournament format in place, she will be put to the test against six other hungry Nova competitors. Gasai Yuno's superior combat skills and sharp mind definitely make her a force to be reckoned with. Kisaragi Chihaya's singing skills have won over the hearts of many and she hopes that she can do the same in ISML. Matsumae Ohana exhibits perseverance and determination that will aid her greatly. Shinonono Hōki, the only other returning contestant in this group, has shown countless times that she will not back down, even if the odds are against her. Despite her short height and girlish features, Taneshima Poplar’s never-ending cheeriness allows her to exceed the expectations of others. Wendy Marvell is often shy, but she will do her best and use her powers to help her friends. All these different skills will make for an interesting battle. In the end, which girl will realize her potential and rise to the top? |

It took a while for these seven girls to open up to their surroundings and show their true personalities. Akiyama Mio, a strict and serious girl, eventually got used to the rather lax and playful environment in the light music club. Kawashima Ami had to break her innocent and faithful facade to reveal her more direct personality in public. Upon arriving on Earth, Konjiki no Yami, originally alone and emotionless, slowly came to understand what it was like to have friends and started showing her feelings every now and then. Kuchiki Rukia became friendlier, more mischievous, and positive after the events that happened in Soul Society made her lose all hope and means for living. Nymph once did everything for the sake of pleasing her master, but, with her chain severed, she portrayed herself more delicately to others. While Tomoyo sports a cool and confident demeanor, at the same time she tries to act slightly girlish so others can see a different side of her. Beneath Tsukimiya Ayu’s bubble and cheer hid a truth that would come to redefine her sense of self. Which one of these seven girls will be able to stay true to her heart until the match is over? Akiyama Mio, een streng en serieus meisje, kon uiteindelijk toch gewend raken aan de nogal lakse en speelse omgeving in de ‘Light-music’ club. Tomoyo toont een nogal cool en zelfverzekerd gedrag, op hetzelfde moment probeert ze ook wat meer meisjesachtiger over te komen, zodat anderen kunnen zien dat er een andere kant van haar bestaat. Nymph deed oorspronkelijk alles in het belang voor haar meester, maar met haar boeien gebroken, kan ze eindelijk zichzelf zijn. Konjiki no Yami was altijd eenzaam en werd uitsluitend gebruikt voor huurmoorden. Yet another new year and tournament for anime fans to look forward to have arrived. Still fresh from her exploits of obtaining the Heavenly Tiara, Misaka Mikoto hopes to do what the previous Tiara bearers have failed in doing—overcome the tradition of the reigning champion always faltering the year after her coronation. But to do so, she still has to survive the Preliminary Phase. Waiting in front of the Electromaster are six other contestants vying for the same thing. While Hecate, Index Librorum Prohibitorum, and Suigintō have managed to appear in previous ISML Regular Seasons, the same cannot be said of the other three contestants in the pool. Yūki Mikan, Hyūga Hinata, and Erza Scarlet are trying to etch themselves indelibly into ISML, and not merely as footnotes of vanquished nominees. Voiced by Noto Mamiko, Hecate knows that this year might mark her last chance to make amends of her rather abysmal showing in ISML 2009, with Shakugan no Shana: Final currently reaching its conclusion. For the two contestants heralding from the still fresh Index franchise—Misaka Mikoto who is voiced by Satō Rina and Iguchi Yuka as the titular character, Index—it is a matter of if they are well liked or not that will determine their success in the Preliminaries. While Erza Scarlet and Hyūga Hinata’s respective anime are not overtly aimed toward moe, the characters played by Ohara Sayaka and Mizuki Nana cannot be dismissed that easily, as FAIRY TAIL and NARUTO have decent backings in the anime world. While To LOVE-Ru and Rozen Maiden ended quite a while ago, both Yūki Mikan and Suigintō cannot be taken lightly. Popular seiyū, Hanazawa Kana and Tanaka Rie, are behind these two adorable girls, and that factor might even swing the pendulum toward them. After the first bouts are served, which contestant will be able to puff out her chest, and stand victorious when the dust settles? With almost every contender here having performed in the Regular Season at least once, each of these girls have more than enough of a reason to become a part of it once again. Fujibayashi Kyō is not someone one can simply push aside. Even this kind and caring high school student would not think twice about throwing a dictionary at high speed if provoked. Hiiragi Tsukasa may not boast any special powers or talents, but her politeness and cute charms would have anyone wanting to protect and support her. With all nominees having participated in their first battle of the Preliminaries, it is now becoming clearer as to who has what it takes to make it to the Regular Season. Representing Mashiro-iro Symphony, Amaha Miu needs to step it up if she wishes to compete with the best. She may not have won over the hearts of the voters yet with her caring and gentle personality, but she is determined to try yet again. Not wanting to be left behind by her fellow cast members, Hotogi Shirayuki must now work even harder than before. This miko's powers will be put to the test today as she once again attempts to dominate her opponents. A 2nd place finish in her first group match has put Kaname Madoka in a good position. A strong performance here today, and this mahō shōjo may be someone to look out for once the main event arrives. Like Miu, Sena Airi also needs to change her game plan for this match. Despite being the leader in votes for Mashiro-iro Symphony characters, she knows that her weak showing earlier will not be convincing enough and that she needs to go all out for this match. The wealthy ojō-sama, Suzutsuki Kanade, will be required to keep up her performance if she is to participate in Phase II. Uryū Minene must go into this battle with more explosive power if she is to make her presence known among the contestants. Yui, the sole returnee in the group and winner of her first match, looks to continue her success today by showing that she deserves to be in the Regular Season once again. Her energetic personality has helped her before and she is definitely not afraid of using it again. Sakagami Tomoyo has the "cool" factor that her schoolmates enjoy, but she also has her own personal troubles that she cannot tell others about. Despite her boastful attitude and enigmatic personality, Suzumiya Haruhi is just as conscious about her personal feelings as any other girl. Furude Rika's bubbly personality and cute catch phrases have many people flocking towards her. With the help of her four guardians, Hinamori Amu gains the courage to change for her own sake and for others. Kinomoto Sakura's invincible words and never-give-up spirit have helped her on countless occasions and would be very useful in this type of match. After living and interacting with different people, Nymph values the friendships she has made and is willing to defy her own master. Sengoku Nadeko continues to try to overcome her shyness and be more active in the world around her. Suiseiseki usually acts proud and mighty, but she does this to cover a more concerned and troubled self. Each girl will go all out to return to the Regular Season by any means necessary. Each of them has a personal trait that brings them closer to their goal, though they will still attempt to do so by any means necessary. Mikuru might be her show’s moe-blob, but she's also a time-traveler, a status she can use to her advantage for the upcoming matches. However, will that bring her victory against the rest? Chrome Dokuro has never opened up to anyone except Mukuro, but she will need to show her resolve to win and go all out if she wants to have a chance of winning. Evangeline has lived within Mahora Gakuen for more than fifteen years, yet may never be able to leave the school due to a curse. However, she was also once a powerful vampire who was known by many names and is capable of beating even a hypersonic Negi. Will that power allow her to obtain her goal? On the other hand, there is also the Master Throne, Hecate, whose sole purpose of existence is to revive the Snake of Festival. Even though it requires her sacrifice, she hasn’t the slightest complaint in her role. Nagato Yuki might look like an ordinary girl, but in truth, she wields tremendous intelligence and abilities that allow her to even hijack Haruhi's reality-warping power. Many of the girls here wish to overcome their personal problems and find out who they truly are. Rei is usually seen alone with an aura suggesting that she does not wish to interact with others. Upon her encounter with the son of the commander, she starts to show emotions that many people once thought she never had. After a traumatic event in her past, Erza decided to become stronger, not wanting to be a burden to any of her friends. She may appear strict at first, but many know that she has a kind heart within. Kobato is first seen with no recollection of her past, but with a wish to go to a certain place. To achieve her goal, she needs to collect the sufferings of others into a flask, which may hold the answer Kobato looks for. Mai has been waiting for someone to come to her aid and tell her that she has done enough. Until then, she continues to fight, holding onto the promise she kept long ago. Shinobu may have been heavily wounded, but that does not mean she can still act the same way even in her child form. She knows she hates her master, yet is unable to leave him alone because of his kind personality. Shana was conflicted between acting as a normal student and acting as a Flame Haze. In the end, she decided to combine both into one being and press on with what she believed was the right thing to do. At first, Shiina Mafuyu was afraid of being around boys. It was only until later that that she gained the courage to help out her male friend and go so far as to confess to him. The personal battles they have within themselves seem hard to overcome at first, but with the help of those who care about them, they are able to go the distance. Which of these girls are able to surpass their personal conflicts and advance? Um desejo de muitas das raparigas aqui é o de triunfar sobre os seus problemas pessoais e descobrir quem realmente são. Rei vê-se a si mesma como alguém possuidor de uma aura desprovida do desejo de interagir com os outros. Aquando do seu encontro com o filho do comandante, ela começa a demonstrar emoções que muitos nunca pensaram que tivesse. Após um evento traumático no seu passado, Erza decide tornar-se mais forte, com o objectivo de não ser um fardo para qualquer dos seus amigos. Ela pode parecer demasiado rigorosa à primeira vista, mas muitos sabem que no fundo ela possui um coração gentil. Primeiramente, Kobato não tem qualquer memória do seu passado, apenas um desejo de ir a determinado local. Para atingir o seu objectivo, ela tem de recolher o sofrimento de outras pessoas num frasco, o qual pode conter a resposta que Kobato procura. Mai tem estado à espera que alguém venha ao seu auxílio e lhe diga que o que fez já é suficiente. Até lá, ela continua a lutar, agarrando-se à promessa que guarda desde há muito tempo. Shinobu pode ter sido gravemente ferida, mas isso não a impede de agir do mesmo modo, mesmo com a sua compleição de criança. Ela sabe que odeia o seu mestre, no entatno é incapaz de o deixar sozinho devido à sua personalidade bondosa. Shana estava dividida entre agir como uma estudante normal ou como uma Flame Haze. No fim, ela decide combinar ambos os modos num só e perseverar naquilo que ela acredita ser correcto. No início, Shiina Mafuyu tinha medo de conviver com rapazes. Apenas bem mais tarde ganha finalmente a coragem de ajudar o seu amigo, indo até ao ponto de lhe confessar os seus sentimentos. As lutas pessoais que estas concorrentes travam no seu íntimo parecem, à primeira vista, difíceis de ultrapassar, mas com a ajuda daqueles que se importam, elas conseguem-no fazer. Podrá parecer estricta en un principio, pero muchos saben que debajo de eso existe un corazon amable. Kobato se muestra en un principio sin recuerdos de su pasado, pero desea ir a un cierto sitio. Para lograr eso debe llenar un frasco con el sufrimiento de otras personas, que podría ser la respuesta a lo que busca. Mai ha querido que alguien la asista y le diga que fue suficiente. Hasta entonces seguirá peleando para mantener la promesa hizo hace tiempo. Shinobu estará malherida, pero eso no evita que actue del mismo modo así sea en su forma de niña. Kirishima Shōko's dedication to the boy she loves clearly shows that she values the time they spend together. Although their feelings may not be mutual, her faithfulness is what has kept her strong to this day. Kuroi Mato's wish to befriend the girl she met on her first day of junior high school taught her the value of friendship. Strengthened by this, Black Rock Shooter enters today's bout with a burning desire for victory. Miki Sayaka put her crush's life above her own, and ended up sacrificing hers to allow his to flourish, only to have him turn his back on her. With her life literally in shambles, Sayaka is now determined not only to defeat everyone here, but also to win back her love interest. Morishima Haruka's search for love ended abruptly when she found the right man for her, even though he seems the least likely of candidates. Nonetheless, knowing that he's there to support her, Haruka marches forward with her head held high. Shinonono Hōki endured an unpleasant childhood filled with pain. However, thanks to the help of her childhood friend, she was able to overcome these troubles and stand here today. Yune's brave decision to venture into a foreign country to experience its culture was all for the sake of her blind sister, whom she loves dearly. Even though she may be small, her caring heart is larger than that of many others. Yuzuriha Inori was essentially made to be a replacement for someone who had passed away. Despite this, the emotions she experiences are human, and she would like for nothing more than to be treated as such—to be helped, accepted, and loved. As these match-ups get underway, which one of these girls will show that her thirst for victory is unmatched? While the field is quite balanced in terms of how each character shows off her charm, each of them also brings a unique flavor to the table. Isayama Yomi can be easily treated as the protective older sister type. She continues to fight with various demons in order to protect the peacefulness of the city and to see her sister smile everyday. Also a swordswoman, Kawasumi Mai emits an enigmatic, yet beautiful aura. She may seem emotionless at first, but getting to know her better allows one to see reactions one would not expect. Kushieda Minori is the type of friend who is able to ease any form of tension with her personality. Minori is also very perceptive and does whatever it takes to make her friends as happy as possible. Despite Sakagami Tomoyo’s cool attitude, she does not really like to be seen or called as such. Oftentimes, she tries to find ways to make herself more girlish while still upholding the school rules. Hiiragi Tsukasa is clumsy and a bit of an airhead, but always does her best to get things done right and properly. Kanzaki Kaori may seem cold and menacing at first, but she is very kind and will fight for her friends, putting her life on the line if needed. Last Order is quite childish and usually fools around, even in the darkest and most painful of moments. Nymph acts as the intelligent one in her circle of friends, but there are times when she is insecure about her personal beliefs and desires. Despite how she was made, Suigintō will fight by any means necessary to gain recognition from "Father." A quick thinker with strong magical power, Tōsaka Rin is ready to pummel any opponent to the ground with her jewels and spells. An open seat is within their reach, but it is up to them to take the final steps to its safety for the remainder of the Preliminary Period. Who will be able to obtain that very spot? Prohibitorum does not wish to always be protected, for even she is willing to go onto the battlefield and fight using whatever she can to help her friends. Looked at as an ominous and scary girl at first, Kuronuma Sawako tries her best to break the invisible barrier between herself and the rest of her classmates. Not wanting to let go of her friendships, Kuroi Mato tries her best to help her friends in times of need and sorrow and will go great lengths to fix any problem. While Reki is silent and emotionless, there is no doubt that she is highly reliable when it comes to taking down a target or saving her friends from various distances away. Sena Airi had a hard time accepting the changes that were happening inside the school, but she grew fond of the new students around her and tried to take a step forward on her own. Shionji Yūko is not willing to waste any time solving the cases in front of her, for she will blame herself for her carelessness if things are unable to go smoothly. While there are a lot of schisms and divisions of anime otaku throughout the world, there are several sections that are more popular than the others. One such group is the ‘loli-loving group', a sect of fans who prefer and idolise petite girls; they don't need to be underage, but only slightly modest in size. Phase II of Preliminaries in ISML 2012 pits three maidens against each other who share this archetype. Petite, lovable, and usually causing others to want to protect them because of their cuteness, the trio of Astarotte Ygvar, Kanzaki H. Aria, and Taneshima Poplar is at the forefront of that fandom. While they do have their own personal strengths and weaknesses, the fact that they are often teased by their circle of close friends and love interests stems from their adorable appearances and bashful personalities. Make no mistake; they still have their own personal traits, such as Astarotte being a succubus princess, Aria being a top class ‘Butei’, and Poplar being an adept waitress at Wagnaria. Adoration is a powerful feeling; it’s an emotion that comes to light spontaneously, without any warning. Elucia de Lute Irma harbours such feelings for the older brother she "adopted" in the human world, feelings born from observing his unflinching will to achieve set targets. Coupled with her ditzy nature, her stepbrother's intellect and nonchalant attitude earned her admiration. Inui Sana adores one of her seniors at her high school because of her kind nature. This led her to join the same club as that girl so that they could spend time together after school. Similarly, Kasugano Sora fell head over heels for her twin brother due to his kindness. He kept her company during her hospitalisation and catered to most of her needs just like a caring brother should do. With three light-headed girls all in one arena who lack the understanding of the modern world, one can be certain that someone will accidentally hurt herself before the match even starts. Chii is a special persocom who learns via observing the actions of other people rather than running certain programs into her system. While trying to learn from everyday actions, Chii sometimes misunderstands things, thus getting herself into odd situations. Hiiragi Tsukasa is a nice and polite girl, but oftentimes forgets or misplaces certain things that are necessary at any given moment. There are times when she wishes to overcome her personality and be strong like everyone else, but often fails to accomplish anything in the end. Kotobuki Tsumugi is a wealthy aristocrat who is very knowledgeable in a multitude of areas. Although she is raised in a higher class, she knows nothing about middle-class life and enjoys the smallest things that others often take for granted. Will it be Chii, Tsukasa, or Tsumugi who is able to walk out of this match without any harm done to her? |

Alice is more likely seen doing things her way to get what she wants than following orders from the higher ups. Although she is cocky and proud, there are moments when she feels insecure and weak and wishes to have someone by her side. Kotegawa Yui is a strict girl who attempts to get everyone to follow the school rules and exercise proper behavior. Despite this, she tries to consider what is best for everyone with no ill intentions and thinks first before she acts. Shirai Kuroko is a rather perverted girl who usually wishes to be with her senior all the time. Although she acts in such a way, she also has a strong sense of justice and will take on anyone who tries to disrupt the peace of the city or harm her friends. Which personality will reign supreme when all is said and done? |

The common saying, "Looks can be deceiving," sets the tone for the match between Aragaki Ayase, Laura Bodewig, and Uryū Minene. In what is going to be a chaos-filled battle, these three girls all want to win, and will undoubtedly try anything in order to do so. On the surface, Aragaki Ayase is a middle school beauty who works part-time as a model. However, those who have dared to deceive or lie to her know just how violent and fearsome she can get. Laura Bodewig's physical stature may not seem intimidating. But, within that small frame of hers is a surprising amount of physical strength, of which she is not afraid to use in order to get her way. Upon seeing Uryū Minene, it is hard to see how she might be dangerous. However, underneath that lovely, captivating tsundere personality of hers lies the mind of a highly wanted terrorist, capable of destroying everything in her path. The three contestants who stand here today have laid waste to countless people in the past. Today, the test to see which of them can outsmart and outperform the other two begins. In the end, who will move forward in victory—Ayase, Laura, or Minene? |

The wish to be more human and girlish was all these three characters wanted to achieve. Ayanami Rei is a quiet character who is usually seen alone and reading a book. But even she gets curious about how people use their emotions, and wishes to express her feelings as best as possible. C.C. is the mysterious witch usually cooped up inside a room for fear of getting discovered by certain people. There are times when she leaves and walks around the school campus for fun just to experience briefly a life she could have had if it were not for her powers. Tsukimiya Ayu comes up as an unusual friend with a cute catchphrase and almost impeccable timing when running into people without notice. Despite these odd quirks, getting to understand Ayu as a good friend may allow one to see her in a more beautiful light than originally perceived. A life afflicted with pain and suffering is, strangely enough, often what brings out the best in people. Whether it's that hidden talent or life-changing epiphany, the struggles they face now may be what transforms their lives later. Growing up in an abusive household caused Iwasawa Asami to isolate herself from her parents. Luckily, she found solace in music and used it to filter out the pain of living in the world. Even after reaching the Afterlife, her love for music stayed just as strong, resulting in her becoming the leader of Girls Dead Monster. For Kisaragi Chihaya, her little brother's death pushed her into an endless pit of depression. Blaming herself for it, Chihaya lived her days in grief, having lost the only person who appreciated her singing. But it is because of this unfortunate event that Chihaya discovered her passion. Although not musically inclined like the other two, Tomoe Mami also had her fair share of struggles. After losing both her parents in a car accident, the young Mami realized the importance and fragility of life. As a mahō shōjo, she was determined to not let others meet the same fate as her family. Having reached the light at the end of the tunnel, these three girls have essentially rediscovered the meaning of their respective lives. A battle between three veteran servants is one way to perceive this match as Konjiki no Yami, Maria, and Suiseiseki prepare themselves for the upcoming brawl. Raised as an assassin, Konjiki no Yami's sole purpose in life was to follow the orders of her clients and complete her mission. With her mission temporarily on hold, Yami joins the rest of the cast in their ridiculous schemes while having fun at the same time. Maria is a very intelligent girl, known to be the only person to graduate from an elite and gifted school at such a young age. Despite her academic intelligence, Maria seems to lack any knowledge of the daily lives of an average middle-class adolescent. Suiseiseki comes across as an arrogant and out-spoken doll, but her image hides a sincere child who cares deeply about all those like her. She does not wish to fight with anyone for their creator's affection, but when the situation calls for it, she has no choice but to fend off her adversaries. Will it be Yami's power, Maria's intelligence, or Suiseiseki's magic that will bring victory when all is said and done? |

After destroying the entire village, Ai took up work as a messenger of hell to atone for her sins. Furude Rika appears as a cute girl brimming with happiness. In truth, she is trying to save everyone from a calamity that will befall them, but every time she comes close to an answer, she fails to protect those who are dear to her. Illyasviel von Einzbern's heart was easily torn when those she loved disappeared from her sight. From then on, her goal was to be strong enough to exact revenge on those who turned against her. Surely, none of these girls wish to be in a world filled with hatred and malice. If only there were some people who would be willing to reach out their hands and tell them that everything will be all right... |

As newer anime are given to us, some of the older shows may start to fade from our memories. This has led to their main casts starting to be marginalised. With the influx of newer contestants in the previous edition of ISML, both Sakurano Kurimu and Ikaros failed to overcome the 2011 preliminary rounds in Phase III, after their entries into the 2010 edition of the tournament. And fate has been even crueler to Shinku, as her last appearance was in 2009. Added to the fact that she was eliminated in the first round of Preliminary Phase III last season, her prospects looked grim. But, with the new system in place for this year, the segregation of the contestants into Nova and Stella brackets means that all three girls' chances of entering the Regular Season are not as dim as last year. Since they are not up against newer girls who are fresh in the voters’ minds, they will be on almost equal footing in terms of recent material for entry into the Regular Season. Which one of the maidens will get the thumbs up from the voters this time around? Er wordt steeds meer anime gemaakt en dat laat ons soms de goeie oude tijden vergeten. Dit leidde tot onder andere het wegzwenken van hoofdpersonages van ooit-sterke series in ISML. Deze drie deelnemers, die vandaag concurreren op de tweede dag van de tweede Preliminary-ronde, hadden de vorige editie van ISML niet gehaald. Vooral door de instroom van nieuwe deelnemers in de vorige editie van ISML, zijn zowel Sakurano Kurimu en Ikaros er niet in geslaagt in de voorrondes van ISML 2011 zege te vieren. Beiden hadden hun laatste hindernissen niet kunnen overwinnen in de Preliminaries fase III. Het lot is nog meer wreed voor Shinku, want haar laatste optreden was in 2009. Met het feit dat ze vorig seizoen werd uitgeschakeld in de eerste ronde van de Preliminaries fase III, zagen haar komende jaren in ISML er smaar somber uit. Maar met het nieuwe systeem voor de editie van dit ISML-jaar, de segregatie van de deelnemers in Nova en Stella betekent dat hun kansen op het reguliere seizoen niet zo zwak zijn als hun prospect van vorig jaar. Life is not all fun and games. In order to attain gratification and satisfaction, one must be willing to sacrifice her precious time and energy. For Amaha Miu, being the president of the Nukobu meant spending vast amounts of her free time after school nurturing injured or homeless animals back to health. Coupled with a part-time job, these responsibilities put a strain on her health. However, knowing that she's able to save animals from death’s precipice is enough of a reward. Although slightly lazy, Hoshii Miki backs it up with a large amount of natural talent. Despite this, even she learned that hard work and determination are necessary to rise to the top. Her dream of being the top idol as well as the continued support from her fans are what allowed her to continue moving forward, even in the worst of times. Being a girl made Konoe Subaru's life that much more difficult. Facing the risk of being fired if her real identity was revealed, Subaru lived every school day in anxiety. But because of her precious master whom she would give her life to serve, all these troubles were seemingly insignificant. These three girls have garnered the respect of their peers due to their personalities and dedication towards reaching their goals. Today, whose determination and perseverance will allow her to walk away in victory? |

There I was, trapped inside a large, eerie room. The air was heavy and filled with dark premonitions, creeping into me. As I silently moved forward, three silhouettes appeared before me, their eyes fixated on each other. Cold shivers started to rain down upon me as the thick smell of death threatened to suffocate. As their distance from me decreased, I began to see them more clearly. If not for the depressing atmosphere, it would be easy for me to fall for either one of the three girls. With silky, sapphire hair and a petite body, Fear Kubrick could easily be mistaken as a cute girl in need of protection. But somehow, her gaze that night was scornful and malicious, akin to someone who enjoys bathing in blood. Across from her was Hotogi Shirayuki, a shrine maiden with long black hair. While she seemed to be the most level headed of the three, it was clear that the heat I felt in the room permeated from her. The last figure was Takakura Himari, a peculiar girl wearing some kind of hat on top of her chestnut-coloured hair. Reeking with the scent of death and chased by terrible rumours, she is not who most people think she is. As they clashed, I managed to free myself and escape. But a thought still lingers in my mind—which one of them came out on top that night? |

The results in the first round of Preliminary II for these contestants were markedly different. Elucia de Lute Irma managed to stave off fierce competitors in her first round, gathering over three thousand votes and emerging triumphant from her arena. Beating her two opponents was no mean feat, as the two vanquished maidens garnered 2416 and 1369 votes. As all three girls were the main characters of their respective series, it made her win even more impressive. But her current challengers didn’t get the rub of the green in their previous rounds. Kunieda Aoi was well beaten in her preceding match, tallying a measly vote count of 1328. When compared to the other two contestants in her arena, who both raked in more than 2500 votes each, her performance was abysmal. Fingers point to the fact that her anime is a shounen, which tends to not do as well in ISML. As for Taneshima Poplar, she didn’t win her match, nor did she end last. Garnering 1942 votes in the previous round, she was sandwiched by the winner who tallied over four thousand votes and by another contestant who managed to siphon away 849 votes. While their characteristics overlapped, Poplar faced a strong seiyuu-fan camp. Will today’s fixture be a mere formality with Elsie winning, or will a spanner be thrown instead with either Aoi or Poplar upsetting the applecart? How to win his heart? The answers for this question might be different, so the girls vying for the affections from the ‘harem centre’ needs to strike using whatever charms they have. Mine Riko decided to steal a march on her love rivals by using her alluring figure and seductive charms. Although she uses physical torment to her advantage, Riko prefers witty comments and a favourable atmosphere to underpin her desires towards Kinji. As the 4th heir of the Lupin family, it is fitting that she would rather arm herself with wit and allure to gain the upper hand. For Nanasaki Ai, keeping her calm and composed exterior has been the preferred method of attack. Kind and humble, Ai is a friend of her love interest’s little sister. In her own arc, the short-haired swimmer’s gentle nature manages to win over Junichi’s heart. On the other hand, Shimada Minami acts like the typical tsundere towards the boy she’s fallen for. Despite hitting Akihisa countless times, this flat-chested lady still tries her best to win her man, such as giving him a spare lunch box when he forgets to bring his own. While her acts of kindness may be few and far between, the impact seems all the greater in her sweetheart’s eyes. As they face off against each other, which type of ‘assault’ will melt the voters’ hearts—the seductive charms of Riko, the kindness expressed by Ai, or the ‘icy love’ portrayed by Minami? If there was one thing that these girls lacked, it was the ability to cope and interact with others properly. With her father to thank for ingraining in her from a young age the brutality of males, Inami Mahiru came to fear them to the point of striking first before they could retaliate. As she continued to work with her co-workers at a family restaurant, her androphobia started to heal and she eventually learned to calm herself when dealing with the opposite sex. Laura Bodewig came to the academy thinking that she was better than everyone else. After a mock battle gone wrong where her comrades had to save her, Laura became a team member and was willing to socialize with other students. Mikazuki Yozora's cruel personality has made many people fear her and not want to have any form of relationship with her. Yet, Yozora created a club dedicated to making friends and beneficial social conversation so that she could interact nicely with the people around her. With many colleagues by their sides, these three lift their heads high and advance forward to better their scores and obtain a seat in the Regular Season. |

For these three girls, it was hard trying to fully open their hearts to their surroundings. Throughout most of her childhood, Sanzen'in Nagi was the target of kidnapping due to her wealth and status. Because this happened to her for most of her life, Nagi came to shun the outside world and shut herself inside her room where she could be isolated and do whatever she wanted. Sōryū Asuka Langley is a proud girl who wishes to appear and perform perfectly as a model for other students and pilots. While abrasive, there are times when she becomes insecure, but forces it aside to hide any weakness in her facade. Yin is considered a doll that should have no emotion and minimal interaction with her co-workers and clients. As she conversed with various people, she slowly started to express her feelings about certain situations, something that no doll should be able to do. With thanks to the exchanges with many people, these three girls have slowly started to shape their hearts and personalities for the better. When Nagi, Asuka, and Yin face off against each other, who will be the one standing tall when the match draws to a close? |

Hecate (Shakugan no Shana)

While there are not many similarities between Hecate, Kagura and Saten Ruiko, they all share the trait of being their franchise’s moeblob. Voiced by Noto Mamiko, ‘The Throne Master’ Hecate's cold exterior tends to stave people off of her. Coupled with her affiliation to Bal-Masque, many are also scared of her. It is hard to fall in love with someone whose true self is unknown. Only a handful of people truly know her inside and out, and to those people, she is an existence worth protecting. Unlike most of Kugimiya Rie’s cast roles, Kagura is far detached from the typical tsundere girl. The ‘China Girl’ Kagura may appear as a benevolent cute girl, but she in fact belongs to one of the strongest and most bloodthirsty clans of the Amanto races. Despite her background, she manages to escape her fate and now lives with a highly dysfunctional, yet closely knit, adopted family. On the other hand, Saten Ruiko is just your average pretty girl. The one peculiar thing is that Saten-san, whose seiyū is Itō Kanae, is one of the few Level Zeros in Gakuen City, a city filled with espers. Unperturbed by her lack of power, she’s still able to lead a meaningful life there, surrounded as she is by world-bending powers. Which moeblob will emerge triumphant in this bout—Hecate, Kagura, or Saten Ruiko? Three new girls and one common problem: lack of attention. Akaza Akari is a good-natured girl. She debuted as the protagonist in her anime, but gradually started to fade into the background. Now, she desperately tries to find her way back to being more than just an extra. Perhaps it is because she's such a nice, sweet girl. Since she was a child, Haqua du Lot Herminium always sought to be the best in everything she did, hence her perfect record. But if she learns there are others performing better than her, she starts to lose confidence and closes herself off from the world. Lastly, we have Sena Airi. At first, she just looks like the principal’s spoiled and stubborn daughter. She actually lives a simple life in a rather small apartment and often goes shopping in a local supermarket. She wants people to know her, but is afraid they would go away if they were to learn her secret. It’s clear these three girls want to be in the spotlight, and what is better than winning an ISML match to reach that? Now that today’s stage is set, to whom will you give your attention? 3 nieuwe meisjes, 1 gemeenschappelijk probleem: een tekort aan attentie. Akaza Akari is een vriendelijk meisje. Misschien is het omdat ze zo’n vriendelijk en zoet meisje is. Sinds ze een klein meisje was, probeerde Haqua altijd haar best te doen wat haar altijd een perfecte uitslag opleverde, maar als ze er achter komt dat iemand anders het beter doet dan haar, verliest ze haar vertrouwen en sluit ze zichzelf af van de wereld. Ten laatste hebben we Sena Airi. Her dream of becoming a real human being grew a bit more realistic. Shinonono Hōki has a hard time reaching her dreams. She still loves Ichika, but realizes that after a long period of not seeing him many things have changed, as there are now competitors in earning Ichika’s love. She has problems not only in her love life, but also at school as she has a hard time finding her own fighting style. These three girls know their weaknesses and will try to overcome them. There is no universal way of showing affection to a significant other. Maidens in love can reveal their feelings by rejecting warmth and care, much like Kanzaki H. Aria. She is dishonest with herself, denying the feelings she has for her crush; she instead calls him her slave and gives him unreasonable demands. Yet, when her beloved is approached by others, Aria becomes possessive and will not budge an inch. Her feelings shine the brightest when the pair is in a life or death situation, where she is willing to sacrifice herself in his stead. At the other end of the spectrum, Kasugano Sora openly embraces the love of her life. Having been taken care of by her special someone for a long time, the seeds of love began to grow between them. Her bold ‘declaration’ that the two were an item shocked their friends. But by doing that, there was no ambiguity in their relationship. Kunieda Aoi is an example of a girl who tried to balance in the middle by acting friendly but still maintaining her distance. By standing as a friend and a close confidant, she tried to capture the heart of her beloved. While the target of her affection seemed oblivious to her subtle approaches, almost everyone else could see what she was trying to achieve. After 500 years, the quiet Oshino Shinobu doesn’t really care anymore about her vampire destiny. Being with Koyomi gave her new vitality and she turned out to be quite talkative. She started calling him ‘my master’ and wanted to play again and fill herself with delicious snacks. Though these girls are trying their best to live like they want, don’t think they will go easy on you if you don’t vote for them today! If she really wants to get a ticket to the Regular Season in Phase II of the Preliminaries, she will need to make a comeback now or risk having last year's disappointment repeat itself. Shinonome Hakase will already need a small miracle if she wants to proceed, as she still has no points. Though many have given up on the chances of her obtaining a spot, the possibility of an upset is still there. It’s not the most important match of Phase II, but this can provide an interesting twist to the development and standings in Nova 4. So to which of these girls will you give your vote? Sitting alone, enjoying the gentle breeze while gazing at the sunset, I spotted a group of girls across the horizon. I felt the sudden urge to have a chat with these three who looked so benevolent and innocent. As I approached the maidens, one of them acknowledged my presence and offered a place for me to sit. Atop her raven-coloured hair was an assortment of flowers. She looked like the most mature of the three and introduced herself as Uiharu Kazari. As she sat down, she turned on her laptop, and politely told me that she had some unfinished tasks to do. The calm atmosphere was then broken as the other two girls started throwing tantrums. Before the situation spun out of control, Uiharu gave one of the girls some marshmallow sweets. This girl with short, rose-coloured hair then pouted cutely. She then introduced herself as Sakurano Kurimu, and much to my astonishment turned out to be a third-year high school student. And here I thought that the world couldn't be any more hilarious. The third girl then bowed, exposing her long, silvery hair hidden underneath her goofy-looking hat, and introduced herself as Illyasviel von Einzbern. After her presentation, she returned to her childish self and clung on to me. As the sun's rays dimmed far across the vista and we went our separate ways, I could not help but feel blessed by the chance encounter. Although she can be seen as an odd person who fights with demons at night, she is very protective of her friends and will do anything to make sure no harm is dealt to them. Ryōgi Shiki is a rather unsociable person who does not wish to open her heart too much to other people. Even with her cold demeanor, Shiki will try to help those in need and defeat the evil that lurks around the city. Who will be able to walk away from this one alive when the match is over? Victory here is crucial, for it determines which of these three girls will be able to relax for the rest of the Preliminary Phase. Hecate is a mostly stoic character and will do whatever it takes to complete her mission and personal goals. She may have to soil her hands, even backstab her friends, but she is willing to go that far to fulfill a duty that may change the course of the world. Hiiragi Kagami is the rational one in her circle of friends who is usually seen playing the straight man. Despite bringing her friends back down to Earth, she is very considerate and always does things for the well being of others. Hirasawa Yui is always seen with a smile on her face and rarely worries about the events that surround her. Whenever she puts in the effort to do something, Yui can achieve things that are beyond her friends’ understanding. Though each character portrays a different personality, all have the goal of making it through this round. Will it be the quiet Hecate, the tsundere Kagami, or the genki Yui who will be moving on to the Regular Season? The end is nearing and Phase II of the Preliminaries is almost over with only this final round remaining. With one ticket to obtain in each group, these three girls all have the ambition to reach the Regular Season, which is a dream for all anime girls. Kaname Madoka is rather selfless and wishes to be a magical girl simply so that she can help others. With a large amount of magical potential within her, she was able to win two matches; only Shinomiya Ayase was able to defeat her. However, Madoka won’t give up and still has a chance to reach the Regular Season if she can win today’s match. The spirit hunter Haqua du Lot Herminium should not be underestimated as she managed to get three comfortable wins. Though she will have to rely on her intellect once again if she wants to beat her current opponents and book a place amongst the 2012 contestants, her hopes are as high as her returned confidence. These two treacherous opponents face small Tōwa Erio. Believing herself to be an alien investigator monitoring humans, Erio constantly wraps herself inside a futon following an incident where she broke her leg while trying to fly on her bike. This however doesn’t appear to be a disadvantage for her as she was able to crush her opponents and achieve a monstrous 2,405 vote difference. In this deciding match, three girls face each other for a ticket to the Regular Season! Who will you support? While it takes effort to put on a smile no matter the situation, it takes even more to understand the situation and act accordingly. Although created to give birth to the ultimate successor for the Grail, Irisviel von Einzbern lived a normal, womanly life that many people take for granted. Fighting not for her sake, but for her husband as well as her family, Irisviel will continue to hold her head up high and face any problems that come her way. Nakagawa Kanon was afraid of being forgotten by others, thus she wanted to continue as a solo idol after her group broke up. Eventually, she came to terms with her past and believed that she could obtain her shining moment, be it as a soloist or with a larger group. While seen by others in an elegant manner, Suzutsuki Kanade has a habit of embarrassing or blackmailing others to get what she wants. Although she enjoys most of her antics, she knows fully well the situation of all of her friends and tries to help them out as best as she can from behind the scenes. With all three of them giving their all, a match like this can only be bittersweet. Which of them will be able to advance to the Regular Season through this stage? Phase II of the Preliminaries is coming to an end as the girls ready themselves for the final battle. Many girls are already doomed to the third phase, but in Nova 8 there are still three candidates in the running for a Regular Season ticket. Although she may not look like it, Fear Kubrick is a ruthless killer, a terrible torture device from the Inquisition. She has not only devoured everyone in her anime, but in her group as well. Though she came to Haruaki's home in hopes of purifying her curse, she will not hesitate to show her true self in the match that can decide this year’s ISML fate. Working as a butler for the Suzutsuki family, Konoe Subaru dresses like a male in order to serve due to her own family circumstances. She acts strong and self-assured as she leads her group with the highest vote difference. She also doesn’t plan to give up this advantage and let any opponent steal her beloved ticket. Described as a liberal arts girl—who never speaks out loud, but thinks twice as much as the average person—Shiomiya Shiori is a quiet girl who loves to read books. Shiori managed to win all three of her matches and while she didn’t get that much attention, she’s one of the more dangerous girls in ISML as she easily can grab the win by ‘stabbing’ her opponents from behind. An exciting match begins yet again, though only one girl can proceed to the next stage. Who will you vote for, Fear, Subaru, or Shiori? As two beautiful maidens square off against each other, some will feel that Amaha Miu is prettier than Hotogi Shirayuki and vice versa. With a pair of clear, chestnut-colored eyes, Miu is the founder and leader of the ‘Neko Club’. With her long, amethyst hair and short stature, she is like a living doll. But, her true beauty is not just superficial. The kind, third-year student also works as a maid at a nearby cafe to support her club, which does not have the funding required to keep its animals well tended. For Shirayuki, her vibrant, sapphire-coloured eyes are enough to bewitch any guy. Coupled with her long, silky hair and shrine maiden outfit, she is a beautiful sight to gaze upon. Being a model student in her school, the miko of the Hotogi clan is one of the elites in her ‘Butei’ division. Who is prettier—Amaha Miu or Hotogi Shirayuki? That is for you to answer. You suddenly remember the past, a past where you had fun with your friends and were able to overcome every obstacle with their help, a past where you wished you could be on the big stage, not for the sake of popularity or self-gain, but for the sole reason that the world would hear your voice. You start singing, freeing yourself from all your doubts, and a huge smile appears on your face. The life of an idol is hard as only a few make it to the top, and today isn’t an exception. More tragedy beset her, with one of her few friends being the notorious keeper of the 103,000 grimoires of forbidden spells and all that are entailed with them. Saten is as normal a person as can be. In Gakuen City's science world where the borders of reality and fantasy collide, she is a Level Zero—powerless. In an attempt to alter her personal reality, she tried the ‘Level Upper’ in hopes that her esper powers would awaken. Despite being powerless, she still leads a happy life with her friends. It’s the beginning of the end! With the final stage of the Preliminaries open, the girls who previously failed to advance are back, trying to snatch away those last few Regular Season tickets. In this arena we find two girls, both of whom have already managed to reach the ISML Regular Season once before. It is set to be an exciting game, not only because both their anime were made by popular studio, Kyoto Animation, but also because they share some characteristics. Although Kamio Misuzu appeared to be slightly strange when first introduced, it is shown later that she is a kind-hearted girl who would never hurt anyone. The gentle Asahina Mikuru is a strange girl as well, as she claims to be a time-traveler and holds back a lot of secrets with her catchphrase, “That’s classified information!” Still, this is a battlefield upon which you're not going to get anywhere just using kindness and good intentions. These two know that they have enough Saimoe experience and will appeal to their numerous fans so they can get enough votes to advance in their knock-out bracket of Phase III, sending the other contestant home. Now that every vote counts, whom will you support? Ini adalah awal dari akhir! Ryūgū Rena (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) vs. Sakurano Kurimu (Seitokai no Ichizon)
This is it, the “last chance saloon.” Call it what you may, but both Ryūgū Rena and Sakurano Kurimu are in this predicament for the chance to enter the Regular Season, and will have to do it the hard way, via the Preliminary III play-off. Ryūgū Rena, the chestnut-haired, hat-wearing maiden, likes to add in unique phrases when talking, which many people find adorable. Do not be fooled by her cutesy manner, for she can be scary when angered. “Rena” is said to not even be her real name, as she changed it due to some unforeseen circumstances. For pink-haired Sakurano Kurimu, her childish nature, added to her petite stature, is the trait that stands up for her. She does not act like a third-year high school student. Her soft anger can easily be doused by giving her sweets or other condiments. After both contestants failed to make the grade last year, which one of them will be able to survive Day One of Preliminary III this time around: Ryūgū Rena, the girl from Ibaraki, or Sakurano Kurimu from Hekiou Gakuen? Yamada Aoi is most likely seen slacking around and goofing off. She likes to listen to other people's conversations and will attempt to get in on them despite drawing poor conclusions beforehand. Despite her poor performance, she is ready to improve herself and, with effort, has the ability to execute her mission. However, this is not the service industry, but a fight to see who has what it takes to make it to the top. Using their skills, who will be the one getting one step closer to her dream while the other is sent packing home? Akaza Akari (YuruYuri) vs. Honma Meiko (AnoHana)

While both are the protagonists in their anime, in ISML they faded more into the background and couldn’t really steal the spotlight. Though Honma Meiko was close to grabbing a ticket in Phase II of the Preliminaries, she was quickly beaten and had only little to offer against her opponents. Akaza Akari had a worse Phase II campaign, as she only was able to grab a meager four points. Regardless of them appearing as nice and sweet girls, they may share a similar burden of invisibility. Akaza Akari, though struggling to get back in front, is often bantered with over her small presence and pushed into the background. Honma Meiko, who returned to the world as a ghost, could only be seen by her childhood friend, Jinta. In their anime, but probably also in this year’s ISML, they have had a lot of issues with this character-trait. But, they are really trying their best to get over it, so don’t forget to pick your favorite girl in this arena! Lala only came to Earth to get away from the stress of her high-class lifestyle and various arranged marriages. While she chose a boy at random as an excuse to stay on Earth, little did she know that she would fall for him in the end. Nor did she know how much the boy she chose would mean to her, how he would shape her into the person that she is today. While both are at a loss for words, only mere actions can be shown in the arena. They must stand and face what lies ahead of them, even if things do not go according to their plans... Hiiragi Tsukasa (Lucky ☆ Star) vs. Tsukimiya Ayu (Kanon)
With these knockout brackets in the third phase of the Preliminaries, we have already seen some familiar faces falling out and losing their last chances at getting into the Regular Season. Today, it's no different; we'll have to say goodbye to some once-popular girls who haven’t stood the test of time. In this arena, we have Hiiragi Tsukasa and Tsukimiya Ayu—two girls with notable Saimoe careers. In terms of performance and statistics, Tsukasa draws the longest straw and is able to grab two more points than Ayu in the second phase. She also has an overall better past in Saimoe tournaments. However, neither of these girls was able to grab a Regular Season ticket in ISML 2011; this could give us an interesting match, as we don’t know how much a year without competition has affected their performances. A KyoAni battle is sometimes unpredictable and it will really depend on how the girls will approach their fans and the indecisive voters. The fact that they both have rather small physiques, are around the same age, and are both portrayed as klutzes, makes this match even more exciting! Who will you support? Kushieda Minori (Toradora!) vs. Uiharu Kazari (Toaru Majutsu no Index)
With a gentle soul and a pure smile comes a heart stronger and richer than gold. Kushieda Minori is the type of girl that easily allows one to be attached to her. With her kind words and innocent mindset, it is not difficult to understand why many people are able to chat with her freely without feeling the need to hide anything. But when a friend is in need, she will go the distance to help him or her out from the sidelines so that he or she can smile by the time tomorrow comes. Given her personality, Uiharu Kazari is usually seen as the one who needs the most protection. She has always taken her work seriously and is very willing to lend her hand to those who need it the most. But make any of her friends suffer, and Kazari will not sleep until she finds out the cause of their misery and confronts it as soon as possible. Both characters are great friends to have, but only one of them will be able to move onto the final round. Will it be Minori's or Kazari's heart that will lead her to her victory?
